Creative Captioning
Subtitles/Captions translate dialogue and audio effects into words that are particularly helpful for deaf and hearing impaired people. However, the appearance of captions has hardly changed in the last 40 years. Online platforms still adopt these methodologies without asking what is possible.
During this residency, Ben Glover will explore how captions can be used creatively to enhance a viewing experience not only for those who rely on them, but for all viewers of the content. Captions fail to capture tones and moods of speech, some of which can be integral to the subject matter. Sound effects are often simplified through text.
